What is Trans Abdominal Egg Collection (TAEC)?

Trans Abdominal Egg Collection (TAEC) is a specialised procedure used to retrieve eggs from the ovaries when traditional transvaginal egg retrieval is not feasible. This technique is often recommended for women with certain anatomical challenges, such as ovarian positioning or previous surgeries, that make transvaginal access difficult. At Al Moosa IVF, we use advanced ultrasound guided imaging to facilitate a safe and effective procedure.

Who can benefit from TAEC?

TAEC may be the right choice for women who have:
  • right arrow

Ovaries that are difficult to access transvaginally due to anatomical reasons such as large fibroids, raised BMI or inherited uterine anomalies such as uterine didelphys

  • right arrow

Undergone previous pelvic surgeries that have altered their anatomy

  • right arrow

Conditions such as severe endometriosis or pelvic adhesions

  • right arrow

Cervical or vaginal wall cancers and are undergoing treatment to prevent spread of the cancer

The TAEC Process at Al Moosa IVF

At Al Moosa IVF, we prioritise your comfort and success. Here’s what you can expect during your TAEC journey:

1

Comprehensive Consultation

Our fertility specialists will conduct a thorough evaluation of your medical history, perform diagnostic tests, and create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.

2

Ovarian Stimulation

You will receive fertility medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This process is closely monitored through transabdominal ultrasounds and blood tests.

3

Preparation for TAEC

On the day of the procedure, you will undergo sedation or anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Our team will use advanced imaging techniques to guide the procedure.

4

Egg Retrieval

Using a fine needle inserted through the abdominal wall, our specialists will carefully collect the eggs from your ovaries. The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure precision and safety.

5

Fertilisation and Embryo Development

The retrieved eggs are fertilised with sperm in our advanced laboratory. In some cases, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be used to facilitate fertilisation. The resulting embryos will be monitored for growth and development.

6

Embryo Transfer

The best embryo(s) are selected and transferred into the uterus using a thin catheter. This is a quick and painless procedure.

7

Follow-Up and Support

After the transfer, our team will provide guidance and support. A pregnancy test is usually scheduled about two weeks later to confirm success.

Every question deserves care. Find clarity as you take the
next step.

The TAEC procedure is performed under sedation or anesthesia, so you should not feel any pain during the procedure. Some mild discomfort or cramping may occur afterwards, but this is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief medication.

The entire process, from consultation to embryo transfer, usually takes about 4-5 weeks. However, the timeline may vary depending on your individual treatment plan.

As with any medical procedure, TAEC carries some risks, such as infection, bleeding, or damage to surrounding tissues. Our team will monitor you closely to minimise these risks.
