What is Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)?

Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced assisted reproductive technology (ART) usually used to treat severe male infertility. It involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg to increase the chances of fertilisation. ICSI is often performed as part of an In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) cycle and is particularly beneficial for couples facing challenges such as low sperm count or poor sperm motility.

Who can benefit from ICSI?

ICSI may be the right choice for you if
  • right arrow

You have mild to severe male factor infertility (low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal morphology).

The ICSI Process at Al Moosa IVF

Here’s what you can expect during your ICSI journey:

1

Fertility Consultation

Our fertility specialists will conduct a thorough evaluation of your medical history, perform diagnostic tests, and create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.

2

Ovarian Stimulation

You will receive fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This process will be closely monitored through ultrasound scans and blood tests.

3

Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure is performed to retrieve them. This is done under sedation to ensure your comfort.

4

Sperm Collection and Preparation

A sperm sample is collected (either through ejaculation or surgical retrieval) and prepared in our advanced laboratory. The most viable sperm are selected for the procedure.

5

ICSI Procedure

A single sperm is injected directly into each mature egg using a specialized microscope and microinjection tools. This maximises the chances of fertilization even in cases of severe male infertility.

6

Embryo Development

The fertilised eggs (embryos) are monitored for growth and development over the next few days.

7

Embryo Transfer

The healthiest embryo(s) are selected and transferred into the uterus using a thin catheter. This is a quick and well tolerated procedure.

8

Follow-Up and Support

After the transfer, our team will provide guidance and support. A pregnancy test is usually scheduled about two weeks later to confirm success.

Every question deserves care. Find clarity as you take the
next step.

The ICSI procedure itself is not painful, as it is performed under a microscope in the laboratory. The associated steps (e.g. egg retrieval) are performed under sedation to ensure your comfort.

Approximately 70-80% of mature eggs are fertilised through ICSI depending on factors like age, egg quality, and sperm quality.
