HyCoSy scan fertility ultrasound test Al Moosa IVF

What is a HyCoSy scan?

A HyCoSy Scan (Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography), is a type of pelvic ultrasound scan used to evaluate the health and patency (openness) of your fallopian tubes and uterus. This procedure is an essential part of fertility assessment, offering valuable insights into potential barriers to conception. It is a safe, effective, and less invasive alternative to traditional methods like laparoscopy or hysterosalpingography (HSG).

During the procedure, a small amount of contrast fluid is introduced into the uterus through the cervix. Using ultrasound imaging, our specialists can observe the flow of the fluid through the fallopian tubes, ensuring they are open and functioning properly.

Benefits of a HyCoSy scan

  • right arrow

There is no exposure of the ovaries to radiation like in HSG

  • right arrow

It is minimally invasive and can be done in a consultation room unlike the laparoscopy and dye procedure which needs to be done in an operating theater

  • right arrow

It can be combined with a pelvic ultrasound scan to assess the ovaries and antral follicle count to measure ovarian reserve (how fertile a woman is)

  • right arrow

It can be combined with SIS (Saline Infusion Sonogram) to assess the endometrial cavity for genetic abnormalities such as uterine septums, didelphys and acquired uterine abnormalities such as polyps and fibroids

  • right arrow

The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes and results can be shared immediately

  • right arrow

Helps your doctor recommend the most appropriate fertility treatments based on your results

Why is a HyCoSy scan important?

The health of your fallopian tubes and uterus plays a critical role in fertility. Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes can prevent the egg and sperm from meeting, while uterine abnormalities can affect implantation. A HyCoSy scan helps identify:

Other structural issues that may impact fertility

Who should consider a HyCoSy scan?

What to expect during your HyCoSy scan

What to expect during your HyCoSy scan

1

Preparation

The procedure is usually performed in the first half of your menstrual cycle (after your period ends but before ovulation). You may be advised to take a mild pain reliever 30-60 mins before the scan to minimise discomfort.

2

The Procedure

A thin catheter is passed through the cervix into the uterus. A contrast fluid is introduced, and ultrasound imaging is used to monitor the flow of the fluid through the uterus and fallopian tubes.

3

Duration

The entire procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes.

4

After the Scan

You may experience mild cramping or spotting, but these symptoms usually resolve quickly. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after the scan.

Every question deserves care. Find clarity as you take the
next step.

Most patients experience mild discomfort or cramping during the procedure, similar to menstrual cramps. Any discomfort is usually short-lived and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Your doctor will discuss the findings with you immediately after the scan. A detailed report will be provided for your records.

The procedure is generally safe, with minimal risks. Some patients may experience mild cramping or spotting. There is also a small risk of infection and you will normally be given antibiotics as a precaution.
